The highly anticipated Sydney production of the hit musical Matilda has at long last opened in Sydney. The adaptation of Roald Dahl’s much-loved children’s novel Matilda has enjoyed rave reviews on the West End and Broadway and earned a bevy of accolades for composers Dennis Kelly and Australia’s own Tim Minchin, including a record-breaking seven Laurence Olivier Awards.
Like the book, the musical follows the story of Matilda Wormwood, a 5 year old girl with a voracious appetite for books and a stunning intellect to match. Her family, however are a different story, with her car salesman father preoccupied with ripping customers off with his shoddy vehicles and a mother who is far more interested in her looks than in books.
When Matilda gets to start school earlier than the other kids her age, it seems like she might have finally found a place where her abilities are nutured by her kind teacher Miss Honey. But then she encounters the principal, Miss Trunchbull.
The production is playing exclusively in Sydney and has been praised for capturing the playful, anarchic spirit of Roald Dahl’s vision. Staged at the Lyrics Theatre, the show runs until November and is selling fast. Tickets are available from the musical’s official website.
Prior to the musical’s original debut in the UK in 2010, Matilda was adapted for the big screen in 1996, directed by Danny DeVito and starring Mara Wilson. The book was released in 1988 with distinctive illustrations by Quentin Blake that first gave visual form to Dahl’s pint-sized heroine.
