The 4th of July, or Independence Day, is one of the biggest celebrations in the USA. The day commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, which legally separated the United States from Great Britain. This meant the country was no longer ruled by the British monarchy and the seed of America’s proud democratic tradition was planted.

Whether you’re a patriotic American far from home or an Aussie who loves the chance to celebrate the land of the free and the home of the brave, it’s a great occasion to create your own festivities by grabbing a hotdog, getting dressed up in an Independence Day costume and decking the place out in red, white and blue. Although it’s a great time for parades and late-night fireworks in the sunny northern hemisphere, we recommend keeping it cosy if you’re celebrating down under — a great excuse for baking an apple pie.
