Food

Whether you’re hosting a casual backyard barbeque or classing it up with a Hamptons-style soiree, fabulous finger food is essential. Putting on an impressive spread is easy with the abundant array of delicious fruit currently in season. Crackers and cheese are off the menu while berries and mango have their time in the sun (without melting, we might add!). You may have been told not to play with your food, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get creative!

If a classy canapé is more to your taste, these recipes make for gourmand-approved finger food fare.

Drinks

Remember to keep things cool with plenty of drinks on hand for tipplers and teetotallers alike. A couple of Caribbean cocktails will stop your guests from getting hot and bothered while keeping with the summery vibe. Or maybe you’d prefer to wet your whistle with some strawberry jello shots – hey, if it’s made from fruit it must be healthy, right? If your party’s more of a BYO kind of deal, here’s a CostumeBox pro-tip: an inflatable pool with a few bags of ice works great for keeping your friends’ tinnies cold! It’s a good idea to put out a pitcher or two of water to balance things out, and to make sure it stays chilled use a muffin pan for supersized ice cubes with a hint of fruity flavour.

Costumes

Nothing says summer fun like a theme party. Think Hawaiian luau, Baywatch, under the sea, freaky tiki – the possibilities are endless! Invite some mermaids onto shore, party with sharks and welcome friendly luau ladies into your midst. Just make sure there’s someone to keep an eye on things – we’re sure a Baywatch babe or hunky lifeguard would be happy to oblige!

Decorations

Transform your party venue into an underwater wonderland with some quick and easy DIY decorations. All you need is a couple of paper lanterns and you’ll be swimming with the fish in no time. For fuss-free ways to set the scene for beachy bonhomie, check out our range of backdrops, cut-outs and centrepieces like the ones below. Take the tiki theme to the next level with a DIY tiki hut that doubles as a bar, or keep it G-rated with some simply but effective ice cream balloons (just make sure you’ve got enough of the real thing to go ‘round when the kids start to get ideas!). Inflatable sea life will look right at home in the pool, and pool noodles can be transformed into bamboo tiki sticks with a few colourfast markers. Don’t forget your beach ball.
